Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient in Gravol Tablets

The Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient is dimenhydrinate.
Chemically, dimenhydrinate is a salt of two drugs: diphenhydramine, and 8-chlorotheophylline, a chlorinated derivative of theophylline.
The effects of dimenhydrinate are very similar to those of diphenhydramine hydrochloride. The main differences are a lower potency, and a longer latency.

Uses of Gravol Tablets

This medication is used to prevent and treat motion sickness, vomiting, dizziness caused by motion sickness, as well as nausea and vomiting associated with various conditions such as chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. It is also used to treat nausea and spinning sensation (vertigo) due to Ménière's disease and other conditions that cause these symptoms.
Gravol is a medicine that relieves sleeping problems.

Gravol Tablets - Dosage

Motion sickness, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and spinning sensation (vertigo):The usual adult dose of the tablets is 50 mg to 100 mg taken every 4 hours as needed. Do not take more than 400 mg in a 24-hour period. The long-acting form of dimenhydrinate tablets are taken every 8 to 12 hours, with a maximum of 3 tablets in a 24-hour period.
If you are taking dimenhydrinate for motion sickness, the first dose should be taken at least 30 minutes and preferably 1 to 2 hours before departure.

Surgery: To control nausea and vomiting following surgery in adults, the usual dose is 50 mg to 100 mg taken by mouth. After surgery, similar doses can be used up to a maximum dose of 400 mg in a 24-hour period.

Children: For children 2 years of age and over, your doctor or pharmacist will recommend the dose of dimenhydrinate based on age and body weight. Gravol ( dimenhydrinate) should not be used for children or infants under two year old unless your doctor has told you to do so. For children 2 to 12 years old, the dose is given every 6 to 8 hours as needed. For children 12 years and over, the dose is given every 4 to 6 hours as needed.

Drug Class and Mechanism

Dimenhydrinate belongs to the group of  antihistamines used as an antinauseant, antiemetic, and antivertigo agent.
Dimenhydrinate works to relieve or prevent nausea and vomiting by affecting the vomiting centre in the brain. Most people can expect some relief of nausea and vomiting within one hour of taking any form of dimenhydrinate.

Missed Dose

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take only your next regularly scheduled dose. Do not take a double dose of this medication.

Alcohol: Alcohol may add to the side effects of dimenhydrinate (e.g., drowsiness) and should be avoided when using this medication.

Impaired coordination: Dimenhydrinate may impair the mental or physical abilities needed for activities such as driving a car or operating machinery. Do not perform such activities until you know dimenhydrinate does not affect your ability to do them safely.

Pregnancy: Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of taking dimenhydrinate if you are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant.In case you become pregnant while taking dimenhydrinate, call your doctor.

Breast-feeding: This medication passes into breast milk. If you are a breast-feeding mother and are taking this medication, it may affect your baby. Talk to your doctor about whether you should continue breast-feeding.

Children: The safety and effectiveness of using this medication have not been established for children under two years of age. Caregivers of children between 1 and 2 years old should contact their child's doctor before giving dimenhydrinate.

Dimenhydrinate should not be used by anyone who:

is allergic to dimenhydrinate or to any of the ingredients of the medication
has chronic lung diseases such as bronchitis or emphysema
has difficulty passing urine due to an enlarged prostate (prostatic hypertrophy)
has glaucoma
