Metaspray Nasal Spray contains Mometasone which is a glucocorticoid steroid used in the treatment of seasonal allergy symptoms (start taking 2-4 weeks prior to the start of pollen season). It prevents year round symptoms like runny nose, itching, congestion (stuffing). Mometasone Furoate Nasal Spray is also helpful in treating nasal growths (nasal polyps).
The nasal spray is available with strength of 50 mcg in a 10 ml bottle, containing 120 puffs.

Uses of Metaspray Nasal Spray

Metaspray Nasal Spray is administered in the treatment of nasal symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis. It also helps prevent and treat seasonal and year-round allergy symptoms of the nose like stuffiness or congestion, itching, and frequent sneezing. It is recommended to treat growths in the nose (nasal polyps). Metaspray Nasal Spray is found to be very effective in reducing the swelling of the nasal passages.

Mechanism of Action

Mometasone Furoate Nasal Spray when used helps in reversal of the activated inflammatory proteins, and helps activating the secretion of anti-inflammatory proteins. It also stabilises the cell membranes, thus reducing the influx of inflammatory cells. Systemic effects were not detected in adults, adolescents or children following the administration of Mometasone Furoate Nasal Spray.

Mometasone Furoate Nasal Spray – Dosage

Treatment of Allergic Rhinitis
Adults and adolescents 12 Years of age and older
–2 sprays (50 mcg of Metaspray Nasal Spray) in each nostril once daily (total daily dose of 200 mcg).
Children 2 to 11 years of age
— 1 spray (50 mcg of Metaspray Nasal Spray) in each nostril once daily (total daily dose of 100 mcg).

Treatment of Nasal Congestion associated with seasonal allergic Rhinitis
Adults and adolescents 12 Years of age and older
— 2 sprays (50 mcg of Metaspray Nasal Spray) in each nostril once daily (total daily dose of 200 mcg).
Children 2 to 11 years of age
— 1 spray (50 mcg of Metaspray Nasal Spray) in each nostril once daily (total daily dose of 100 mcg).

Prophylaxis of Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis
— 2 sprays (50 mcg of Metaspray Nasal Spray) in each nostril once daily (total daily dose of 200 mcg).
In cases seasonal allergy that precipitates nasal symptoms of allergic rhinitis, prophylaxis Mometasone Furoate (Metaspray Nasal Spray) 50 mcg (200mcg/day) is recommended 2 to 4 weeks prior to the anticipated start of the season with pollen.

Treatment of Nasal Polyps
Adults 18 Years of age and older
It is recommended to take a dose of 2 sprays for the treatment of nasal polyps (50 mcg of Metaspray Nasal Spray) in each nostril twice daily (total daily dose of 400 mcg).
A dose of 2 sprays (50 mcg of Metaspray Nasal Spray) in each nostril once daily (total daily dose of 200 mcg) is also effective in some patients.

Warnings and Precautions to be taken when using Metaspray Nasal Spray

Before using Metaspray Nasal Spray please inform your doctor about all the medicines that you take including no prescription medications, over the counter medicines and herbal remedies.
Candida Albicans infections have been observed in a few cases, thus on observing an infection in nasal area, discontinue the usage of Metaspray Nasal Spray and systemic intervention to treat the infection must be undertaken.
Instances of nasal septum perforation can occur during the intranasal application of corticosteroids. As with any long-term topical treatment of the nasal cavity, patients using nasal spray over several months or longer, thus they should be examined periodically for possible changes in the nasal mucosa.
Impaired wound healing has been observed because of the inhibitory effect of corticosteroids on wound healing, patients who have experienced recent nasal septum ulcers, nasal surgery or nasal trauma should not use a nasal spray until healing has occurred.
Nasal and inhaled corticosteroids also may lead to the development of glaucoma or cataracts. Therefore, close monitoring is required in case there is a change in vision or if there is any previous occurrence of increased intraocular pressure, glaucoma, and cataracts.
Hypersensitivity reactions like frequent instances of wheezing may occur after the intranasal administration of nasal spray. Discontinue, if such reactions are observed.
Cautious usage needs to be observed in tuberculosis affected patients or in infections of respiratory tract or related fungal, viral or other infections.
People with weak immune system should avoid usage of the nasal spray.
In some cases usage may lead to nasal bleeding and nasal septum perforation.
It also affects the HPA axis (hypothalamus pituitary axis) of the hormonal system in a few cases which may lead to stunted growth.
In pregnancy Metaspray Nasal Spray should not be used as it may lead to birth defects in newborns.
Nursing mothers should not use Metaspray Nasal Spray as it is excreted in breast milk.

Possible Side Effects of Mometasone Furoate nasal Spray

Mometasone Furoate Nasal Spray (Metaspray Nasal Spray) is usually well tolerated, but in a few cases it is recommended to get medical help, if any of the following possible side effects occur after usage of the Metaspray Nasal Spray:
Epistaxis (nasal bleeding)
Ulcerations
Cataracts and glaucoma
Immunosuppression
Nasal septum perforation
Candida albicans infections
Impaired wound healing
Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis effects, including stunted growth

Contraindications

Mometasone Furoate Nasal Spray is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to mometasone furoate or any of the inactive ingredients present in Mometasone Furoate Nasal Spray.

Store Mometasone Furoate Nasal Spray at 25°C (77°F), can be transported in temperatures from 15° to 30°C (59° to 86°F) Protect from light, place it in a dark place.
Prolonged exposure to direct light should be avoided. Only brief exposure to light, during normal use is acceptable.
