Uses of Tizan Tablets

Dosage
Tizan comes as a tablet to take it orally. It is highly recommended to begin treatment with single oral doses of 4 mg (As side effects are dose related) and Increase the dose gradually (2 to 4 mg steps) to optimum effect. The dose can be repeated at 6 to 8 hour intervals, subject to a maximum of three doses in 24 hours. The total daily dose should not exceed 36 mg.

Drug Class and Mechanism
Tizanidine Hydrochloride, the active ingredient present in Tizan Tablets is an agonist at (alpha) 2 -adrenergic receptor sites and presumably reduces spasticity by increasing presynaptic inhibition of motor neurons. In animal models, tizanidine has no direct effect on skeletal muscle fibers or the neuromuscular junction, and no major effect on monosynaptic spinal reflexes. The effects of tizanidine are greatest on polysynaptic pathways. The overall effect of these actions is thought to reduce facilitation of spinal motor neurons.
The imidazoline chemical structure of tizanidine hydrochloride is related to that of the anti-hypertensive drug clonidine and other (alpha) 2 -adrenergic agonists. Pharmacological studies in animals show similarities between the two compounds, but tizanidine was found to have one-tenth to one-fiftieth (1/50) of the potency of clonidine in lowering blood pressure.
What to Do in Case You Miss a Dose of Tizan Tablets
If you take several doses per day, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it and take any remaining doses for that day at evenly spaced intervals. However, if you remember a missed dose when it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Storage Instructions
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Talk to your pharmacist about the proper disposal of your medication.
Warnings and Precautions to be taken when using Tizan Tablets
Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have liver disease, have kidney disease, have low blood pressure or you are on medication to treat high blood pressure; or you are taking birth control pills. You may not be able to take Tizan, or you may require a lower dose or special monitoring during treatment if you have any of the conditions listed above.
You should not take Tizan Tablets if you are currently taking fluvoxamine (Luvox®),ciprofloxacin (Cipro®) or clonidine (Catapres® and Catapres TTS®), or if you have kidney damage.
Tizan is in the FDA pregnancy C. This means that it is not known whether Tizan will harm an unborn baby. Do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant. It is not known whether Tizan passes into breast milk. Do not take Tizan without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
Side Effects of Tizanidine Hydrochloride Tablets
Possible Side effects that can occur from Tizan usage are listed below. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away: dizziness, upset stomach, vomiting, tingling sensation in the arms, legs, hands, and feet, dry mouth, increased muscle spasms.
