Drug Uses
Januvia (Sitagliptin) is an oral anti diabetic medicine for type 2 diabetes, helping to control blood sugar levels. It also helps regulate post prandial (after meals) insulin levels in the body. Sitagliptin is sometimes used in combination with other anti-diabetic medicines also, such as Metformin.
Januvia is an anti-diabetic drug that increases the secretion of naturally produced Incretin hormones in the body.
Januvia Tablets (Sitagliptin Tablets) – Dosage
The adult dosage of Januvia is one 100 mg tablet once daily. Januvia can be taken before or after meals (monitor blood sugar regularly).
Januvia dosage in renal insufficiency varies between 25 mg to 50 mg (Please check with your physician).
Renal function should be assessed prior and periodically during treatment. Do not crush, chew, or break Sitagliptin tablets (Januvia). Swallow the whole tablet.
Drug Class and Mechanism
Januvia is an oral drug that reduces blood sugar (glucose) levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. After a meal, Incretin hormones (GIP 1 and GIP 2) are released by the intestine, and their levels increase in the blood. Incretin hormones reduce blood glucose by increasing the production, and the release of insulin from the pancreas. Incretin hormones also reduce blood glucose by reducing the secretion of Glucagon (hormone that increases the production of glucose by the liver and raises the blood glucose levels) from pancreas. The net effect of increased release of Incretin hormones is to reduce blood glucose levels. Januvia also inhibits the enzyme DPP-4, that destroys Incretin hormones, and thereby increasing the level and activity of Incretin hormones. As a result, blood glucose levels fall. To summarize, Januvia reduces blood glucose levels by inhibiting DPP-4 and increasing the levels of Incretin hormones.
