Zita (Sitagliptin tablets) is used along with diet and exercise to improve glycaemic/glycemic control (control of the level of glucose in the blood) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (non-insulin dependent diabetes). Zita tablets are available in strength of 100 mg.

Drug Uses
Zita (Sitagliptin) is a member of a class of medicines you take by mouth that lowers blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This medicine helps to improve the levels of insulin after a meal and decreases the amount of sugar made by the body. Zita works when blood sugar is high, especially after a meal. Zita also lowers blood sugar between meals.
Sitagliptin Tablets – Dosage
The recommended adult dose of Zita tablets (Sitagliptin) is 100 mg once daily as monotherapy or as combination therapy with metformin.Sitagliptin tablets can be taken with or without food.
For patients with moderate renal insufficiency the dose of Zita is 50 mg once daily.
For patients with severe renal insufficiency the dose is 25 mg once daily
No dosage adjustment is necessary for patients with mild to moderate hepatic insufficiency. Sitagliptin has not been studied in patients with severe hepatic insufficiency.
No dosage adjustment is necessary for elderly patients.
What to Do in Case You Miss a Dose
If a dose of Zita tablets (Sitagliptin) is missed, it should be taken as soon as the patient remembers. A double dose of this medication should not be taken on the same day.
Storage Instructions
Store at 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Excursions permitted to 15 – 30°C (59 – 86°F) Protect from moisture and light. Keep away from children.
Zita Tablets (Sitagliptin Phosphate) – Contraindications
Zita Tablets (Sitagliptin Phosphate) are contraindicated in patients with a history of a serious hypersensitivity reaction to sitagliptin, such as anaphylaxis or angioedema or to any other component in this medication.
Warnings and Precautions to be taken when using Sitagliptin Phosphate Tablets
Before using Zita (Sitagliptin tablets) please inform your doctor all the medicines that you take including no prescription medications, over the counter medicines and herbal remedies. Tell your doctor if you have ever had pancreatitis, stones in your gallbladder (gallstones), a history of alcoholism, high blood triglyceride levels or kidney problems. The other precautions to be taken when using are:
- Sitagliptin tablets should not be used in patients with type 1 diabetes or for the treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis.
- There have been reports of acute pancreatitis, including fatal and non-fatal hemorrhagic or necrotising pancreatitis, in patients taking sitagliptin.
The characteristic symptom of acute pancreatitis are persistent, severe abdominal pain. Resolution of pancreatitis has been observed after discontinuation of sitagliptin. If pancreatitis is suspected, Zita and other potentially suspect medicinal products should be discontinued. - Lower dosages of Zita are recommended in patients with moderate and severe renal insufficiency, as well as in ESRD patients requiring haemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis.
- When Zita was used in combination with a sulfonylurea, a medication known to cause hypoglycaemia, the incidence of sulfonylurea-induced hypoglycaemia was increased.
- There have been reports of serious hypersensitivity reactions in patients treated with Sitagliptin tablets. These reactions include anaphylaxis, angioedema, and exfoliative skin conditions including Stevens-Johnson syndrome.
Side Effects of Sitagliptin tablets
The possible side effects of Zita (Sitagliptin tablets) reported in 5% or more of the patients being treated with Sitagliptin tablets are upper respiratory tract infection, nasopharyngitis and headache.
In the add-on to sulfonylurea and add-on to insulin studies, hypoglycemia was also more commonly reported in patients treated with Sitagliptin tablets compared to placebo.
