Eltroxin is a hormone replacement medication usually given to patients with hypothyroidism and to treat goiter. Eltroxin is also prescribed for the management of cancerous thyroid nodules. Eltroxin is available as tablets of 25 mcg, 50 mcg and 100 mcg. The inactive ingredients present are as per the old formula of GSK.

Uses of Eltroxin Tablets
Eltroxin is a hormone replacement medicine usually given to patients with hypothyroidism.
Levothyroxine Sodium (the active ingredient in Eltroxin Tablets) is also frequently used to treat goiter because it usually lowers the levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), a hormone that is considered goitrogenic (goiter-inducing). Eltroxin is also prescribed for the management of cancerous thyroid nodules.
Eltroxin Tablets – Dosage
Eltroxin Tablets are taken on an empty stomach approximately half an hour to an hour before meals. Eltroxin tablets have to be swallowed whole, and taken with a full glass of water. The tablets should not be split.
For adult hypothyroidism the recommended starting dose of levothyroxine is 50 to 100 micrograms daily. The dose is adjusted at four or six week intervals by 25 mcg/day (or 50 micrograms/day) until attainment of clinical and biochemical euthyroidism. Starting doses and dose changes may differ with individual patients based upon age, the presence of cardiovascular disease, the development of tolerance (reduced effectiveness with continued use), side effects to the medication, and blood levels of thyroid hormone. It may take one to three weeks after initiating therapy with levothyroxine or changing the dose before effects are seen. The goal of replacement therapy is to maintain a normal blood thyroxine level. In case the dose of thyorxine is increased too quickly, symptoms such as diarrhoea, nervousness, rapid pulse, insomnia, tremors and sometimes anginal pain in cases where there is latent myocardial ischaemia may occur. In such situations the dosage must be reduced or stopped for a day or two, then restarted at a lower level.

Levothyroxine is a synthetic (man-made) version of the principal thyroid hormone, thyroxine (T4) that is made and released by the thyroid gland. Thyroid hormone increases the metabolic rate of cells of all tissues in the body. In the foetus and newborn, the thyroid hormone is important for the growth and development of all tissues including bones and the brain. In adults, the thyroid hormone helps to maintain brain function, food metabolism, and body temperature, among other effects.

Warnings and Precautions when using Eltroxin Tablets
There are foods and other substances that can interfere with absorption of thyroxine replacement. Patients under treatment ought to avoid taking calcium and iron supplements within 4 hours, as well as soy products within 3 hours of the medication, as these can reduce absorption of the drug. Grapefruit juice may delay the absorption of levothyroxine, but it is not believed to have a significant effect on bioavailability. Other substances that reduce absorption are aluminium and magnesium containing antacids, simethicone or sucralfate,cholestyramine, colestipol, Kayexalate. Different substances cause other adverse effects that may be severe. Ketamine may cause hypertension and tachycardia and tricyclic and tetracyclic antidepressants increase its toxicity. On the other hand Lithium can cause hyperthyroidism (but most often hypothyroidism) by affecting iodine metabolism of the thyroid itself and thus inhibits synthetic levothyroxine as well.
Side Effects of Eltroxin Tablets
Eltroxin dosing must be carefully controlled to achieve TSH levels within the normal reference range. Long term suppression of TSH values below normal values will frequently cause cardiac side effects and contribute to decreases in bone mineral density (in contrast too high TSH levels are also well known to contribute to osteoporosis).
The side effects of Eltroxin Tablets are listed belo:
- Immune system disorders: Hypersensitivity reactions such as skin rash and pruritis
- Metabolism and nutrition disorders: Increased appetite, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea
- Nervous system disorders: Excitability, insomnia, restlessness, headache, tremors and seizure. Rare cases of pseudotumor cerebri (benign intracranial hypertension) have been reported especially in children.
- Cardiac disorders: Anginal pain, cardiac arrhythmias, palpitations, tachycardia, increased blood pressure, heart failure, myocardial infarction
- Respiratory, thoracic and mediastinal disorders: Dysponea
- Skin and subcutaneous tissue disorders: Sweating, flushing, hair loss
- Musculoskeletal, connective tissue and bone disorders : Cramps in the skeletal muscle, muscular weakness and decreased bone mineral density. An excessive dose may result in craniosynostosis in infants, and premature closure of epiphyses in children with compromised adult height.
- Reproductive system and breast disorders: Menstrual irregularity, impaired fertility
- General disorders and administration site conditions: Fatigue, heat intolerance, fever, excessive loss of weight
Patients prescribed too high of a dose of levothyroxine sodium may experience side effects which mimic hyperthyroidism.
Eltroxin Contraindications
Eltroxin is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to levothyroxine sodium or any inactive ingredient of Eltroxin tablets.
Eltroxin and Pregnancy
Eltroxin Tablets have been taken by a large number of pregnant women and women of childbearing age without any form of definite disturbances in the reproductive process having been reported till date. Thyroid hypo- or hyperactivity in the mother during pregnancy can however, unfavourably influence the fetal outcome or well-being of the to-be born child.
Eltroxin Overdose
Eltroxin overdose can result in heart palpitations, abdominal pain, nausea, anxiousness, confusion, agitation, insomnia, weight loss, and increased appetite. Allergic reactions to the medication are characterized by symptoms such as difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, or swelling of the face and tongue. Acute overdose of Levothyroxine sodium may cause fever, hypoglycemia, heart failure, coma and unrecognized adrenal insufficiency.
Acute massive overdose of Eltroxin may be life-threatening; treatment should be symptomatic and supportive. Massive overdose may require beta-blockers for increased sympathomimetic activity.
The effects of Eltroxin overdose can appear anytime from 6 hours to 11 days after ingestion of Eltroxin tablets.
