Latoprost RT Ophthalmic Solution – Product Information

Latoprost RT Ophthalmic Solution (Latanoprost Eye Drops) is used to treat high eye pressure (reduction of elevated intraocular pressure) in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. Medicines such as Latanoprost RT are the first line treatment for glaucoma.
Latoprost is also is used for increasing thickness, length, and darkness of eyelashes. Latoprost eye drops (Latanoprost ophthalmic solution) is supplied as a sterile, isotonic, buffered aqueous solution of latanoprost with a pH of approximately 6.7. Each mL of Latoprost contains 50 micrograms of Latanoprost. Latoprost RT contains BAK-free Latanoprost. EU requires replacing of BAK from eye drops wherever possible. Removal of Benzalkonium Chloride (BAK) reduces tearing, burning, itching, and hence reduces drainage from the surface of the eye. Latoprost RT eye drops do not need any special refrigeration for storage and transport.
We also have in stock Lumigan manufactured by Allergan Ltd. which is prescribed for exactly the same medical condition, and also increases thickness, length and darkness of eyelashes.

The recommended regimen for increasing eyelash growth is one drop of Latoprost RT applied with an applicator evenly along the skin of the upper eyelid at the base of the eyelashes of each eye every evening.

Drug Class and Mechanism

Latanoprost RT is a synthetic (man-made) drug that resembles and mimics the effects of natural chemicals (prostaglandins) produced by the body. It is used for reducing intraocular pressure (IOP) and increasing the growth of eyelashes. The exact mechanism of action is unknown. Latanoprost may reduce IOP by increasing the outflow of aqueous humor from the eye of individuals with narrow angle glaucoma. Excessive aqueous humor may cause optic nerve damage and visual loss. It increases  eyelash growth by increasing the duration of the growing phase of the eyelash.

Warnings and Precautions when using Latoprost eye drops

Before using Latoprost eye drops please inform your doctor all the medicines that you take including no prescription medications, over the counter medicines and herbal remedies. Below are mentioned the precautions to be taken before initiating therapy with Latoprost eye drops:
Pigmentation:
Latanoprost ophthalmic solution has been reported to cause changes to pigmented tissues. The most frequently reported changes have been increased pigmentation of the iris, periorbital tissue (eyelid) and eyelashes. Pigmentation is expected to increase as long as latanoprost is administered. The pigmentation change is due to increased melanin content in the melanocytes rather than to an increase in the number of melanocytes. After discontinuation of latanoprost, pigmentation of the iris is likely to be permanent, while pigmentation of the periorbital tissue and eyelash changes have been reported to be reversible in some patients. Patients who receive treatment should be informed of the possibility of increased pigmentation. The long-term effects of increased pigmentation are not known.
Iris color change may not be noticeable for several months to years. Typically, the brown pigmentation around the pupil spreads concentrically towards the periphery of the iris and the entire iris or parts of the iris become more brownish.

Intraocular Inflammation:
Latoprost®  0.005% should be used with caution in patients with active intraocular inflammation (e.g., uveitis) because the inflammation may be exacerbated.

Macular Edema:
Macular edema, including cystoid macular edema, has been reported during treatment with latanoprost ophthalmic solution. Latoprost®  0.005% should be used with caution in aphakic patients, in pseudophakic patients with a torn posterior lens capsule, or in patients with known risk factors for macular edema.
Contact lenses should be removed prior to instillation of Latoprost, and may be reinserted 15 minutes after the administration.
