Uses of Flutivate cream (Fluticasone Propionate Cream)

Flutivate cream is used for the treatment of eczema, psoriasis, allergies and rash.

Dosage

Apply a thin film of medication (Fluticasone Propionate ointment) to the affected area and gently rub in, usually 1-2 times daily or as directed by your doctor.

Drug Class and Mechanism

This medication belongs to the class of topical corticosteroids.
Like other topical corticosteroids, Fluticasone propionate has anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive properties. The mechanism of the anti-inflammatory activity of the topical steroids, in general, is unclear. However, corticosteroids are thought to act by the induction of phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins, collectively called lipocortins. It is postulated that these proteins control the biosynthesis of potent mediators of inflammation such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes by inhibiting the release of their common precursor, arachidonic acid. Arachidonic acid is released from membrane phospholipids by phospholipase A2.

Warnings and Precautions when using Flutivate cream

The use of topical corticosteroids can produce
reversible hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis suppression with
the potential for glucocorticosteroid insufficiency after withdrawal from
treatment. Manifestations of Cushing's syndrome, hyperglycemia, and
glucosuria can also be produced in some patients by systemic absorption of topical corticosteroids while on treatment.

Side Effects of Flutivate cream

The Possible side effects of Fluticasone Propionate Cream are Stinging, burning, itching, irritation, dryness, or redness of the skin may occur when first applied to the skin. This should disappear in a few days.
Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: stretch marks, skin thinning/discoloration, acne, excessive hair growth, hair bumps (folliculitis).Skin infections can become worse when using this medication. Notify your doctor promptly if redness, swelling or irritation does not improve. Rarely, it is possible this medication will be absorbed from the skin into the bloodstream. This can lead to side effects of too much corticosteroid. These side effects are more likely in children and people who use this medication for a long time or over large areas of the skin. Tell your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur: unusual/extreme tiredness, weight loss, headache, swelling ankles/feet, increased thirst/urination, vision problems. A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction may include: rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.
