Uses of Nolvadex Tablets

Nolvadex is used for:

• Nolvadex is used for the treatment of early and advanced ER+ (estrogen receptor positive) breast cancer in pre- and post-menopausal women.
• Nolvadex is used also for the treatment of male breast cancer.
• Nolvadex is approved by FDA to prevent breast cancer in women which are at high risk to develop this disease.

Nolvadex Dosage

Your Nolvadex dosage will depend on whether the medication is being used to treat or prevent breast cancer, how severe the breast cancer is, and whether other medications are being taken. A starting dose of 20 mg is common when preventing breast cancer. The Nolvadex dosage can range from 20 to 40 mg a day when used to treat breast cancer.

Nolvadex is prescribed for metastatic breast cancer for varying lengths of time. It is depending on the cancer's response to the treatment.
Nolvadex is usually prescribed for 5 years, if it is used as adjuvant therapy for early-stage breast cancer. The recommended dose is 20 mg a day - irrespective of weight and age. When taken for 5 years, Nolvadex reduces the risk of developing a second primary cancer in the other breast and the the chance of the original breast cancer coming back in the same breast or somewhere else. For the treatment of infertility: 10-40 mg a day in days 3-7 of the menstrual cycle. Bipolar patients should only use Nolvadex after consulting a doctor, please follow exactly your doctor's recommendation! Commonly prescribed for bipolar disorder are 20 mg twice daily increasing up to 40 mg twice daily.

Missed Dose

If you miss your regular dose of Nolvadex, receive it as soon as possible. If the current time is too close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and then return to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose at once.

Drug Class and Mechanism

Nolvadex is an antiestrogen.
Estrogen can promote the growth of breast cancer cells. Some breast cancers are classified as estrogen receptor-positive (also known as hormone sensitive), which means that they have a protein to which estrogen will bind. These breast cancer cells need estrogen to grow. Nolvadex works against the effects of estrogen on these cells. It is often called an antiestrogen or a SERM (Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator).
Studies have shown that tamoxifen is only effective in treating estrogen receptor-positive breast cancers. Therefore, the tumor’s hormone receptor status should be determined before deciding on treatment options for breast cancer.

Storage Instructions for Nolvadex Tablets

Nolvadex should be stored at temperatures between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C) in a tightly closed and light-resistant container. Keep away from moisture, heat and light. Do not store the drug in the bathroom. Do not receive tablets after the expiration date. This date is printed on the label. Keep the drug out of the reach of children and animals.
