Acitretin Capsules – Dosage
Initial dose: 25 to 50 mg orally as a single dose with food. Oral absorption of Acitretin Capsules is optimal when given with food.
Maintenance dose: 25 to 50 mg/day; dosage should be individualized according to patient's response.
Drug Class and Mechanism
Acitretin is an oral retinoid. Retinoid is a form of Vitamin A. The mechanism of action is not known yet.
What to Do in Case You Miss a Dose of Acitretin capsules (Acrotac Capsules)
Take the missed dose of Acitretin Capsules as soon as you remember. Do not take a double dose.

Acitretin and Alcohol
Evidence has shown that ingestion of alcohol (ethanol) when undergoing acitretin (Acitretin) therapy been associated with the formation of etretinate, which has a significantly longer elimination half-life than acitretin. The longer elimination half-life of etretinate would increase the duration of teratogenic potential for female patients, alcohol must not be ingested by female patients either during treatment with Acitretin or for at least 2 months after cessation of therapy.
Warnings and Precautions to be taken when using Acitretin Capsules(Acrotac)
Before using Acitretin Capsules please inform your doctor all the medicines that you take including no prescription medications, over the counter medicines and herbal remedies. Acitretin must not be used by females who are pregnant, or who intend to become pregnant during therapy or at any time for at least 3 years after discontinuing treatment with Acitretin. Avoid getting pregnant during your treatment, and for at least 3 years after stopping treatment. Acitretin, the pharmaceutical ingredient in Acitretin capsules (Acrotac Capsules), can harm an unborn baby. Major human fetal abnormalities associated with acitretin and/or etretinate administration have been reported including meningomyelocele, meningoencephalocele, multiple synostoses, facial dysmorphia, syndactyly, absence of terminal phalanges, malformations of hip,ankle and forearm, low-set ears, high palate, decreased cranial volume, cardiovascular malformation and alterations of the skull and cervical vertebrae.
Undergo 2 pregnancy tests before treatment, and use 2 effective methods of contraception during treatment with Acitretin (Acitretin). It is highly recommended that contraception be continued for at least 3 years after stopping treatment with Acitretin Capsules.
Do not use "minipills" (progestin-only birth control pills) while taking Acrotac ( Acitretin). This form of birth control pills may not work whle taking Acitretin.
Repeat pregnancy tests each month.
Do not breastfeed while taking Acitretin (Acitretin). Acetretin can pass into your milk.
Do not donate blood while taking Acitretin capsules, and for at least 3 years after you have taken the last dose.
Women who are treated with Acitretin must not drink alcohol during treatment and for at least 2 years after the treatment is discontinued. (alcohol can cause acitretin to convert to etretinate in your body that can take 3 years or longer to be eliminated from your body).
It may take 2 to 3 months before you get the full benefit of Acitretin capsules.
Tell your doctor, if you have any of these conditions:
- kidney or liver disease;
- heart disease;
- high cholesterol;
- diabetes (you may need to check your blood sugar more often);
- if you receive phototherapy;
- if you drink large amounts of alcohol;
- if you have ever taken etretinate (Tegison or Tigason)
Side Effects of Acitretin capsules (Acrotac Capsules)
The side effects of Acitretin Capsules include Cheilitis, rhinitis, dry mouth, arthralgia, spinal hyperostosis, alopecia, skin peeling, dry skin, nail disorder, pruritus, erythematous rash, hyperesthesia, paresthesia, paronychia, skin atrophy, sticky skin, and alteration in lipids.
Possible side effects may also include chapped lips; peeling fingertips, palms, and soles; itching; scaly skin all over; weak nails; sticky or fragile (weak) skin; runny or dry nose; nosebleeds; dry mouth; joint pain; tight muscles; hair loss; dry eyes; and rise in blood fats (lipids).
Less frequent, but potentially serious side effects include: bad headaches, nausea, vomiting, blurred vision; decreased vision in the dark; depression; yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes, loss of appetite or dark urine; aches or pains in your bones, joints, muscles or back, trouble moving; loss of feeling in your hands or feet; frequent urination, great thirst or hunger. Shortness of breath, dizziness, chest pain, weakness, trouble speaking, or swelling of a leg may be signs of a heart attack, blood clots, or stroke.
