Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient in Fertomid

The active ingredient present in Fertomid tablets is Clomiphene Citrate. Each tablet of Fertomid contains 25 mg, 50 mg or 100 mg of Clomiphene.

Uses of Fertomid Tablets

Fertomid Tablets  is used in the treatment of:

• Female Infertility
• Lactation Suppression
• Oligospermia  (low sperm counts)
• Ovulation Induction

Clomiphene Citrate (Fertomid) stimulates the release of hormones necessary for ovulation to occur.
Clomiphene is used to stimulate ovulation (the release of an egg) when a woman's ovaries can produce a follicle but hormonal stimulation is deficient.
Fertomid causes the pituitary gland to produce more follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), which, in turn, stimulate the ovaries into producing more eggs and follicles.Impediments to achieving pregnancy must be excluded or adequately treated before you start therapy using Fertomid. Clomifene citrate may also be used for the treatment of secondary male hypogonadism.

Fertomid Tablets - Dosage

Female infertility
One tablet of FERTOMID 50 daily for five days starting on the 5 th day of the menstrual cycle. If ovulation does not appear to have occurred, a second course of two tablets of FERTOMID 50 daily (in a single dose) for five days should be given starting from the fifth day of the next cycle. A third treatment cycle may follow, with dosage regimens that are similar to the second. An interval of 30 days should be maintained between consecutive courses. In amenorrhoeic patients, the regimen is identical, but treatment can be started on any day.

Male infertility
A dose of one tablet of FERTOMID 25 daily for 25 days followed by a rest period of five days for three months.

Fertomid (Clomiphene Citrate) belongs to the drug class of  synthetic ovulation stimulants.

What to do in case of a Missed Dose

If you miss a dose of Clomiphene Tablets (Fertomid), take it as soon as possible. If you do not remember until it is time for the next dose, take both doses together; then go back to your regular dosing schedule. If you miss more than one dose, check with your doctor.

Fertomid Tablets - Contraindications

Fertomid Tablets  are contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to clomiphene citrate or any inactive ingredient present in Fertomid.

Fertomid and Pregnancy - Success Rate of Fertomid

During Clinical trials, 7578 patients were administered Clomiphene Citrate (Fertomid). Among them successful therapy characterised by pregnancy occurred in approximately 30% of these patients. A total of of 2635 pregnancies were reported. Data available on 2369 of the cases shows that there were 483 Spontaneous Abortions and 24 Stillbirths. Among the live births there were 1697 Single Births and 165 Multiple Births. The survival rate for Single Births was 98.16% and 83.25% for Multiple Births.

Warnings and Precautions when using Fertomid Tablets

Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Clomiphene Citrate may cause blurred vision or other visual side effects during or shortly after therapy. Notify your doctor immediately if you develop any visual side effects and use caution when performing hazardous activities, especially under conditions of variable lighting.
Clomiphene may increase the likelihood of multiple births. Multiple births may carry additional risk both for the mother and for the fetuses.
Do not take clomiphene if you are pregnant. Clomiphene (Fertomid) is in the FDA pregnancy category X. This means that it is known to cause birth defects. It is not known whether clomiphene pass into breast milk. Do not take clomiphene without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Do not take clomiphene  without first consulting your doctor if you;

• might be pregnant;
• have a thyroid problem or another endocrine disorder;
• have undiagnosed vaginal bleeding;
• have endometriosis or endometrial carcinoma;
• have uterine fibroids;
• have liver disease;
• have ovarian cysts or ovarian enlargement not due to polycystic ovarian syndrome; or
• have any other serious or chronic medical illness.

Side Effects of Clomiphene Tablets (Fertomid)

The possible side effects of Fertomid Tablets are listed below.

• Ovarian hyperstimulation, ranging from mild, with enlarged ovaries and abdominal discomfort; to moderate, additionally causing nausea, vomiting, or shortness of breath; to severe and life-threatening.
• Hot flashes.
• Irritability.
• Nausea, abdominal pain.
• Headaches.
• Thick cervical mucus, which sperm cannot travel through. This can be reversed with medicine or bypassed with intrauterine insemination.
• Breast tenderness.
• Blurred vision.
• Hair loss (very rare).
