Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG), a polypeptide hormone which is produced naturally by the human placenta. Vitagon (Chorionic Gonadotropin for injection, USP) is a highly purified pyrogen-free medication obtained from the urine of pregnant females and is available for intramuscular injection in multiple dose vials.

Vitagon Injections are used for induction of ovulation and pregnancy in the anovulatory, infertile women in whom the cause of anovulation is secondary and not due to primary ovarian failure. Vitagon is also used to treat Prepubertal cryptorchidism (to induce testicular descent in situations when descent would have occurred at puberty) and Selected cases of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism in males.

Vitagon Injections - Dosage

The dosage regimen employed for a particular patient will depend upon the indication for the use, the age and weight of the patient, and the physician’s preference.

Vitagon is administered as intramuscular or subcutaneous injection. HCG injections have to be reconstituted with solvent, 2 ml for intramuscular, 1 ml for subcutaneous. The aqueous solution of Gonadotropin has a limited shelf-life. Consequently the solution of Vitagon in the solvent has to be prepared directly before the injection. The reconstituted solution should be used immediately. Unused Vitagon solution must be discarded.

Vitagon Injections (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) – Contraindications

Vitagon Injections (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) is contraindicated in patients with a hypersensitivity to HCG or any other ingredient present in Vitagon injections. It is also contraindicated in cases of Precocious puberty, prostatic carcinoma or other androgen-dependent neoplasm.

Warnings and Precautions to be taken when using Vitagon Injections (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin)

Before using Vitagon Injections please inform your doctor about all the medicines that you take including no prescription medications, over the counter medicines and herbal remedies.

A treatment with gonadotrophic hormones should only be carried out by a specialist physician, with experience in the diagnosis and the treatment of fertility problems. Treatment with Vitagon should be started only when other infertility causes have been excluded.

Vitagon must only be administered after the age of sexual maturity, since before puberty it could induce undesirable stimulation of the ovaries.
Ovarian hyperstimulation occurs in 5% to 6% of the patients treated with gonadotrophic hormones, usually 7 to 10 days after the administration of HCG. The risk of hyperstimulation is particularly high in patients with polycystic ovaries.
In order to reduce the risk of hyperstimulation, the patient must undergo a clinical and endocrinological examination at least every two days during the course of treatment and during the two weeks after the end of treatment.

Multiple pregnancies occur in roughly 20% of patients treated with gonadotrophins. In most cases, the multiple conception results in twins.

Side Effects of Vitagon Injections

The possible Side Effects of Vitagon Injections are headache, irritability, restlessness, depression, fatigue, edema, precocious puberty, gynecomastia, pain at the site of injection. Hypersensitivity reactions, both localized and systemic in nature, have also been reported.

The main serious adverse reactions during this use are:

• Ovarian hyperstimulation, a syndrome of sudden ovarian enlargement, ascites with or without pain, and/or pleural effusion,
• Rupture of ovarian cysts with resultant hemoperitoneum
• Multiple births
• Arterial thromboembolism

Vitagon Injections (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) During Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

The administration of HCG at the early stage of pregnancy due to luteal insufficiency as well as after embryo transfer, supports the development of the endometrium in the periimplantation phase.
It is not known whether HCG is secreted into breast milk and the effects it can have on breast-fed babies are not known. This medication has no indications concerning breastfeeding women.
