Albuterol Sulfate Inhaler (Asthalin Inhaler) – Product Information
Albuterol Sulfate (Salbutamol Sulphate) belongs to the class of medicines known as short acting beta2
–adrenergic agonist. Albuterol Sulfate Inhaler is used in the treatment of bronchospasm in bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis and emphysema, prophylaxis of exercise–induced asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Albuterol relaxes the smooth muscles of all airways, from the trachea to the terminal bronchioles, thus making breathing easier.
Name of Drug
Asthalin Inhaler contains 200 metered doses, each actuation delivers Salbutamol Sulphate IP equivalent to 100 mcg of Salbutamol IP (Albuterol).
Manufacturer of Asthalin Inhaler
Cipla Ltd. India
Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient
Salbutamol Sulphate IP equivalent to Salbutamol IP 100 mcg (for each actuation)
Salbutamol Inhaler is typically used to treat bronchospasm in bronchial asthma, chronic bronchitis and emphysema, and prophylaxis of exercise-induced asthma as well as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Other uses include in cystic fibrosis, along with ipratropium bromide, acetylcysteine, and pulmozyme and subtypes of congenital myasthenic syndromes associated to mutations.
As a beta2
&ndas;agonist, Salbutamol Sulphate also finds use in obstetrics. Intravenous form of Albuterol Sulphate can be used as a tocolytic inorder to relax the uterine smooth muscle to delay premature labor. While Salbutamol is preferred over agents such as atosiban and ritodrine, its role has largely been replaced by the calcium-channel blocker nifedipine, which is orally administered, better tolerated and more effective than Salbutamol.
Albuterol Inhaler (Asthalin Inhaler) – Dosage

To prevent allergen- or exercise-induced bronchospasm: Adults:
Two inhalations, 15 minutes prior to exercise or exposure to allergen.
The maximum dose is 2 puffs, up to 4 times a day. Children:
Half the adult dose.
Fatalities have been reported in association with excessive use of inhaled sympathomimetic drugs like Salbutamol Inhaler in patients with asthma. The exact cause of death is unknown, but cardiac arrest following an unexpected development of a severe acute asthmatic crisis and subsequent hypoxia is suspected.
Drug Class and Mechanism
Pharmacologic studies have established that Albuterol Sulfate (Salbutamol Sulphate) has a preferential effect on beta 2 -adrenergic receptors compared with isoproterenol. It is generally acknowledged that beta 2 -adrenergic receptors are the predominant receptors in bronchial smooth muscle.Activation of beta 2 -adrenergic receptors on airway smooth muscle leads to the activation of adenyl cyclase and to an increase in the intracellular concentration of cyclic AMP. This increase of cyclic AMP leads to the activation of protein kinase A, which inhibits the phosphorylation of myosin and lowers intracellular ionic calcium concentrations, resulting in relaxation. Albuterol Sulfate relaxes the smooth muscles of all airways, from the trachea to the terminal bronchioles. Albuterol acts as a functional antagonist to relax the airway irrespective of the spasmogen involved, thus protecting against all bronchoconstrictor challenges.
You should only use your your Asthalin Inhaler to relieve symptoms of asthma. However, if your doctor has advised you to take regular puffs from your Asthalin Inhaler 100mcg and you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is time to take the next dose, then skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose.
Side Effects of Salbutamol Inhaler
The most common side effects of Albuterol Inhaler are fine tremor, anxiety, headache, muscle cramps, dry mouth, and palpitation. Other symptoms may includetachycardia, arrhythmia, flushing, myocardial ischemia (rare), and disturbances of sleep and behaviour. Rarely occurring, but important possible side effects, are allergic reactions of paradoxical bronchospasm, urticaria, angioedema, hypotension, and collapse. High doses may cause hypokalaemia which are of concern in patients with renal failure and those on certain diuretics and xanthine derivatives.
Storage Instructions for Asthalin Inhaler
Store Asthalin Inhaler between 39 and 86 degrees F (4 and 30 degrees C). Keep Asthalin Inhaler out of the reach of children and away from pets.
Warnings and Precautions when using Asthalin Inhaler
Before using Asthalin Inhaler please inform your doctor all the medicines that you take including no prescription medications, over the counter medicines and herbal remedies. Some of the warnings and precautions to be aware of before using Albuterol Sulfate Inhaler include the following: Paradoxical bronchospasm may occur and should be treated immediately with alternative therapy. In case there is a need for more doses than usual of Asthalin Inhaler, it may be a sign of deterioration of asthma and requires reevaluation of treatment.
Cardiovascular effects may occur with beta-adrenergic agonists use. Consider discontinuation of Salbutamol Inhaler if these effects occur. Use with caution in patients with underlying cardiovascular disorders. Immediate hypersensitivity reactions may occur in certain patients with the use of Asthalin Inhaler. Discontinue Asthalin Inhaler if immediate hypersensitivity reactions occur and consider alternative treatment.
Since there are no adequate and well-controlled studies of albuterol sulfate in pregnant women, Albuterol Sulfate should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.
Contraindications of Albuterol Inhaler
Asthalin Inhaler is contraindicated in persons with a history of hypersensitivity to albuterol or any other ingredients of Asthalin Inhaler. Rare cases of hypersensitivity reactions, including urticaria, angioedema, and rash have been reported after the use of albuterol sulfate Inhaler.
Albuterol Sulfate Overdosage Symptoms and Treatment
The likely symptoms with Albuterol Sulfate overdosage are those of excessive beta-adrenergic stimulation and/or occurrence or exaggeration of any of the side effects, e.g., seizures, angina, hypertension or hypotension, tachycardia with rates up to 200 beats/min, arrhythmias, nervousness, headache, tremor, dry mouth, palpitation, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, malaise, sleeplessness. Hypokalemia may also occur. Cardiac arrest and even death may be associated with abuse of Asthalin Inhaler. Treatment consists of discontinuation of Asthalin Inhaler together with suitable symptomatic therapy.
